The golden handcuffs are real. The title, the salary, the benefits everyone told you to want — and the quiet, persistent sense that you’ve outgrown all of it. Here’s why so many accomplished women stay stuck in careers that no longer fit, and the four-step exercise that finally breaks the pattern.
The wake-up call: when it all changed
After selling my business to a publicly traded company and finishing the fourth year of my non-compete transition, I found myself suffering from severe boredom and burnout. I had spent decades building and leading a company, but when I was really honest with myself, I had felt unfulfilled and restless for five years.
The hardest part? Admitting it — to myself and to my husband. What if this dream failed? What if I risked everything we had built?
I was terrified to tell my husband that I wanted to start a consulting business to coach women — especially knowing how this decision might impact our finances.
Our daughter, Cat, was about to go to college at UGA. We had just closed on our dream home on Lake Keowee after the sale of the business — and life was about to get more expensive.
The fear of stepping away from stability was overwhelming. But deep down, I knew that staying in place wasn’t an option. The question wasn’t if I should take the leap — but how to do it wisely.
The She-Cession
At the same time, during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, millions of women left the workforce in what was termed the she-cession. Many were high-achieving professional women who suddenly found themselves questioning their careers, their futures, and whether they could juggle the new demands on their time and truly achieve financial independence and flexibility on their own terms.
I saw myself in their stories.
Why do smart women feel stuck in golden handcuffs?
Many successful women with two decades of expertise feel trapped by golden handcuffs — great salaries, benefits, and titles that make leaving seem impossible. The fear of losing stability, financial security, and identity keeps them in roles that no longer serve them, long after the work has stopped being fulfilling.
For years, I kept telling myself: ‘You should be grateful.’ You have the title, the salary, the benefits — wasn’t this what success was supposed to feel like? But deep down, I felt trapped.
But here’s the real problem: it isn’t the job. It’s the story we tell ourselves about what leaving would cost.
What do most women do when they feel stuck? (and why it doesn’t work)
When professional women start feeling trapped, they usually take one of three paths:
1. Job-hopping
They assume a new role or company will reignite their passion — only to find themselves feeling the same way six months later. The new job comes with the same problems, just with a different logo.
2. Starting a side hustle
Some launch a side business without a clear strategy, hoping it will evolve into something more. But without a strong offer, pricing strategy, and consistent clients, it quickly turns into just another time-consuming task.
3. Staying put (and convincing themselves it’s fine)
Instead of making a bold move, many women tell themselves they should just be grateful for what they have — even if they’re miserable. Over time, this leads to burnout, disengagement, and resentment.
The smarter approach: thinking like a business owner, not a freelancer
What if, instead of settling for another job or an aimless side hustle, you created a real business?
Consulting isn’t about trading one boss for multiple bosses. It’s about stepping into your power, leveraging your expertise, and designing a business that works for you.
With the right framework, you can replace your income faster than you think — without starting over from square one.
Your first step: overcoming what’s holding you back
Before you map out a business plan or stress over finding clients, let’s tackle the biggest obstacle standing in your way — your mindset.
Right now, something is keeping you from taking the leap into consulting. Let’s break it down:
1. Name the fear
What’s the real reason you haven’t started yet? Write it down.
- Are you afraid of failing?
- Worried about financial uncertainty?
- Wondering if you’re really qualified?
2. Flip the script
For each fear, ask yourself: What if the opposite were true?
- What if your experience is exactly what the right clients are looking for?
- What if consulting gives you more security than the job you have now?
- What if this isn’t a risk — but an opportunity?
3. Find the proof
Look back at your career. Have people already turned to you for advice? Have you solved complex problems that others struggled with?
You likely already have the skills to consult — you just need the structure to turn them into a business.
4. Take one tiny action
Big moves start with small steps. Instead of trying to figure out everything, commit to just one action today:
- Write down one thing you know you’re great at.
- Share your expertise in a LinkedIn post or message a past colleague for insights.
- Start a ‘Consulting Business’ note on your phone and start capturing your ideas.
Small momentum leads to big results. You don’t have to build the whole business today — you just have to start.
